Description

Here is M55 taken with a bunch of 5 minute exposures. I had tried this object earlier with the same telescope and camera, but with exposures that were really too long at 10 minutes each, and not enough of them to really be able to get this right. I almost skipped adding in the luminance anyway because globs don't really need the lum channel due to how bright they are, and the lum channel can easily push the brightness at the center of the glob into a mass with no color and star separation. I think this one ended up looking like it should.

I worked hard to bring out the colors without blowing them out, and to bring up the brightness without clipping and blowing the core while also controlling the background and keeping the noise levels to a minimum. I also made sure to not overdo any noise reduction since for this a light hand is better than a heavy smeared out image. Even no noise reduction is better than too much.

Globular clusters are deceptively hard to process right, but when you get one right it looks very nice. It is a shame many people overlook these amazing objects in favor of galaxies and nebulae because done right they can be as colorful and beautiful as some of the other nice DSOs.
